Besides the beautiful gardens, the summit of Mount Roraima hides fascinating rock formations that look like someone spying on us all the time. They awake our imagination in the attempt to identify something familiar like people’s faces, objects and animals – like the game of seeing pictures in the clouds.

Thousands of black stones scattered on the top, sculpted by the wind and water for millions of years. They frightened the first explorers, inspired writers and fascinate adventures till today (learn the story here). The most famous formation is seen from the road before you start trekking, the Maverick. It is the highest point in Mount Roraima and has the shape of the car. Near the top we found the image that represents Makunaima, and the guardian soon after. The faces of Indians and camels form the entrance gate to the summit and let your imagination run free. Apparently there is no fauna, but the watchful eye notices butterflies, dragonflies, frogs, lizards, centipedes and spiders; all dark and camouflaged in the black stones at the summit or hidden in the vegetation. Their colour is due to the excessive melanin that protects them from strong sun rays. Some come out in the sun, other in the rain. You can also work on your creativity by staring at the clouds, quite expressive, and the puddles on the ground. See how this trip is perfect to exercise body and mind?
