Savannah was the capital of Georgia for many years and has a lot to tell. Almost 300 years old, it is considered one of the largest historic districts of the US with several mansions, churches and centennial public buildings.

The downtown area is very picturesque and cosy. Unlike most part of America, they knew how to preserve the old-fashioned European atmosphere.

Most American cities are dominated by highways, shopping malls and parking lots, but not here. You should get to know the city on foot, stop on the corners and discover shops, museums, bars and amazing cafés. The rectangular blocks and the centennial buildings remind you of cities in Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil), Argentina and Uruguay.

Savannah Bee is an interesting shop, specialized in honey. There are hundreds of flavours made from a selection of pollen used to feed the bees; you simply want to try everything.

I spent only one night there, a quick stop while on a business trip from Miami to North Carolina. I visited a department in the City Hall that offers benefits to foreign companies wishing to establish there; it was enough to feel the cosy vibe.

I have to go back when I am not on business, preferably during the Saint Patrick Festival – the official saint of Ireland, celebrated in all Anglo-Saxon world. Some people told me that Savannah is crowded with tourist during this time, and there are parties everywhere. Another busy time is Oktoberfest, due to the great German community in the country.

In the USA, everything is taken seriously: if it is a tourist city, this will be explored to the limit. With a population of 134 thousand residents, the city receives over 6 million tourists every year!

One of the main seaports on the American east coast is located there, connected with the rail network and working as a strategic point to serve the whole country. The highlight in the downtown area is the bridge crossing the Savannah River, which I passed by on my way to the north.

I left on the next day. On my way out, driving on the plain roads surrounded by luxuriant green vegetation, I saw a peach stall. They were huge and delicious; I guess each one weighed almost a pound!

Take Note

There are several options of accommodation: the coolest one is the new Bohemian Hotel – with a bold and audacious design, it has a fancy terrace that overlooks the river and a bar that is always crowded. Too bad I did not stay there. This time, HYATT let me down – they built a square white elephant in the middle of the historic centre, which looks like a parking lot or a Macy´s shop. The building is disturbing; it does not go with the charm of the city and offers nothing special.
