Casa Batlló: endless source of inspiration

This magical building, one of Gaudí’s masterpieces, is a must-see in Barcelona.

Barcelona is a fascinating city. Reasons abound to fall in love with it: the Mediterranean weather blessed by the sea; the avant-garde vocation; the awarded cuisine; and even Messi’s and his peers’ goals. But to me, one of its greatest charms – one of the biggest reasons for my passion – lies on its lines, curves and forms.

Let me explain: Barcelona is, by vocation, the city of architects. Few destinations in Europe, perhaps only Venice, Paris and Prague would compete with the Catalan capital in architecture. One strong reason that supports this has a first and last name: Casa Batlló.

Casa Batlló, built between 1904 and 1906 in the heart of the city, is a key ingredient in the architecture of modernist Barcelona. Josep Batlló, the textile businessman, asked Antoni Gaudí to remodel his building, at Passeio de Gràcia. Mission accepted, and the Catalan architect did not take long to leave his unique mark. Highlights are the round and organic shapes, the innovation of concepts and nature in all symbolic universe. His unusual façade is an original and fantastic work, full of creativity.

Salvador Dalí said that Gaudí built a house “from the forms of the sea, representing storm-tossed waves”. If the traveler stands before the façade for a while, he may realize that the surreal painter was absolutely right. The eminent professor Joan Bassegoda also used a metaphor: “Casa Batlló is an architectural smile which expands the soul…”
