Alsace is on France’s eastern border and was, for many years, the subject of war with neighboring Germany. Around Christmas, I visited Equisheim, Colmar and Mortzwiller.
EGUISHEIM
Located on the Wine Road, it is a small medieval town, with houses built in German style. It looks like a doll town, and it is even more beautiful at this time of the year with the Christmas atmosphere. All houses decorated with creative and traditional details. I tried the pretzel and hot wine in a street stall.
The big city on this side of Alsace. There is the CHRISTMAS MARKETS, which attract tourists from all around. The whole city celebrates Christmas, all lit and decorated in German style. Really cool at night. We had pork and tarte flambée in a typical restaurant. I had a great time, eating only good food.
That was the first time I saw snow. We were going back to Epinal when the snowflakes started to fall; the road was covered in white very quickly. I loved it, we stopped the car and played a little. It was nighttime and the road was in the mountains, it was really cold.
MORTZWILLER
A really small town with no church, just a street in the middle of the open field. We spent a night there, in a typical house over 200 years old. Something very curious in all homes of Alsace and Lorraine is the shoes at the doorstep or stairways. Whoever comes in always takes off their shoes, no matter if you are in the city or in the countryside. I always forgot and ended up making a mess.
