In northern El Calafate you find Laguna Nimez; the city on one side and Lago Argentino on the other. What you can do fun here is take pictures, ride a bike, go horseback riding and go for a walk. You can go around the lagoon and along the lake.
You pay a small fee to enter, there is no gate. There are other free accesses, but by paying a little money I helped in the conservation and received a map. It is a recent project, the area used to be abandoned. Wear boots, you can get your feet wet or muddy pretty easily.
Birdwatching and identifying the species is interesting, as well as relaxing on a bench. Some birds have a peculiar behavior. For instance, the ducks with their butts sticking out of the water for a long time. Perhaps a competition to see who can hold the breath for longer? Shy flamingos hiding their heads in their bodies – only one showed off for a few seconds, and it was not even very cold. Other birds would pair up and keep swimming in circles, a bunch of them on the same movement. Maybe a courtship dance? And what to say about the bandurrias? They would fly in high speed and disappear in the middle of the chamomiles. Soon after another flock would appear next to me, making a flyby in the middle of the flowers.
I really enjoy this kind of tour, it is really inspiring; observing the animal life in their habitat is great to escape from the daily routine.
