I went to Piriápolis in Uruguay because of the whisky. Not the drink, but the movie directed by Juan Pablo Rebella and Pablo Stoll released in 2004. Part of the plot takes place here, in this beach between Punta Del Este and Montevidéo: the story of Jacobo´s lonely life and the troubled relationship with his brother Herman and his employee Marta, to whom he makes an unexpected proposal during the visit of a relative from Brazil. This mix of isolation, beauty and the possibility of knowing some film locations made Piriápolis the perfect getaway on Carnival.

In southern Brazil, on the border with Uruguay, there is the largest lagoon in the country. A water mirror of over 2.000 km2, surrounded by wetlands and reeds, designated a world freshwater reservoir by Unesco; a place for those who like peace and quiet, fresh air, nature and sports.
This week I visited Colônia de Sacramento, a frontier port city that invites us to go walk on its streets paying attention to details. Mainly on historical zone with it’s ruins, alleys, colonial houses and great taste from the current dwellers.
One of the most inhospitable places I have ever been to, Cabo Polonio sits on the tip of a moon-sliver shaped peninsula that extends into the Atlantic Ocean. The only access is by walking through the dunes or 4×4 vehicles. There is an important light house and a natural reserve of sea lions, the biggest in the world.
In the 7 days before Easter happens the Tourism Week in Uruguay. A good time to know this country so different and hospitable. The photo shows the way to Cabo Polonio, a beach where only 4×4 trucks can drive above dunes.

The same architect also projected a brother – building in Buenos Aires – the Barolo Palace, in Mayo Avenue, which is very similar to the Salvo Palace.
Whoever goes to Rocha – Uruguay, finds several options of leisure and accommodation – starting in CHUY, great for shopping spree in the freeshops and for those who like gambling. On the Brazilian side there is BARRA DO CHUI, a beach with rock formations and a lighthouse. Crossing the border, there is FORTE SAN MIGUEL with great architecture and a museum.
Located in a military area, Santa Teresa National Park is a fascinating place, designed with an aesthetic sense, keeping the ecological balance. It started in the surroundings of Santa Teresa Fortress, in 1762. After being abandoned and laid waste, there was a restoration in 1928, and has been taken care of by Uruguayan military men since then.
